For the 1.389 percent of you out there who are not dieting in January, I present Mrs. Vogel's Sherben, a treat for my Tuesdays with Dorie weekly on-line baking club. These are yummy, but that's really no surprise. Have you ever eaten a bit of fried dough that wasn't? I highly recommend a batch after an afternoon of ice skating with slippery young charges.
Despite being tugged at, yanked on, and otherwise put in precarious situations by little hands, I never fell down once. That merits a bit of deep fried dough, don't you think? Some January afternoon, when you feel like throwing caution and cholesterol to the wind, give these naughty babies a try. The recipe is here with beautiful pictures, I might add.
I'll be back tomorrow with restraint, penance, and Beef with Barley Soup in the Crockpot.

Looks fabulous.
ReplyDeleteHi there!
ReplyDeleteI'm just wondering what you did differently with your fried dough as opposed to the actual instructions from the original poster? because yours look WAY more appealing to me :)
(less rolling?)
Congrats on not falling! And thanks so much for frying along with me this week!

ReplyDeleteLove the name, by the way. I didn't roll mine, too lazy. Instead I pressed it into a rectangle, cut a slit and flipped it inside out. Thanks for admiring them. I didn't have time too since they were devoured much too quickly.
I love love love fried dough. You really can't go wrong with fried dough. Your post makes me want to go play in the snow and come inside to hot cocoa and some delicious fried dough! I will definitely be trying this one.
ReplyDeleteooh! Yours look more like funnel cake! Yum!
ReplyDeleteAs kids we used to make this for a snack..a Tongon family lived across the street and they taught us to do this..loved it! Come say hi :D
ReplyDeleteI baked them and after seeing all the delicious fried ones I am starting to wish I would have fried- yours look great!
ReplyDeleteVery shapely and delicious looking! These are the perfect skating snack! Here we can buy something similar, but thicker and more bread-like on the canal when we're skating. I may just go get one of those instead of making more Scherben!
ReplyDeleteI also love fried dough! It is my favorite! But yours is nicer. Mine has black spots!
ReplyDeleteFried dough? Not something I know a lot about, but then neither is snow or ice, but I'd give all three a go:)
ReplyDeleteLooks good. I'm one of those that's dieting (trying anyway) though....
ReplyDeleteCould you write about scones and ward Halloween carnivals, too?
ReplyDeleteThat was the best time to eat fried dough.
I'd say anytime would be a good time for this! Looks delicious :)
ReplyDeleteFried dough always reminds me when I went to a carnival somewhere in Western PA, it was so retro, so cool.. and they had a bake sale...I miss those days.
ReplyDeleteOh man. I need to make this for my husband. He would love me forever. Great blog by the way...just started following.
ReplyDeleteyeah fried dough is always good isn't it? i mean you could put an old shoe on it and i'd still it eat.
