Super Fast Grilled Steak Sandwiches

My little sister asked me what we were having for dinner last night. When I told her we were having grilled steak sandwiches, she asked me, "Does your husband know how lucky he is? Mine is getting a bowl of cereal!" Believe me when I tell you that my husband gets his requisite nighttime bowls of Cheerios, but last night he struck supper-time gold. Juicy grilled steak sandwiches on crusty rolls with sweet bell peppers and melted cheese make for one man-pleasing dinner. Best of all, it's not much more effort than pouring some Kix and milk into a bowl. Especially if you can get your fortunate fella to man the grill. Move over Lucky Charms, now there's something meatier.
Start with some thin cut steaks. I wanted strip steaks, but my butcher didn't have any, so I opted for tri tip steaks. (I paid about $4.00 for 3/4 lb. which was plenty for four sandwiches.)
Drizzle the steak with worcestershire or steak sauce and sprinkle with salt and loads of freshly ground black pepper.
Quarter some bell peppers, removing the stems and seeds, and drizzle with a little bit of olive oil. Toss the steaks and bell peppers on the grill. (Thin steaks will only need about 4-5 minutes per side. The peppers need about seven minutes per side.)
Slice peppers and steak into thin strips. Drizzle the steak with a little more steak sauce or worcestershire.
Halve some hoagie rolls and place them on a foil lined cookie sheet. (I buy bolillo rolls from Albertson's market. They're $2 for six.) Drizzle the rolls with a teensy bit of olive oil and rub with a garlic clove, if desired. Top one side of the rolls with steak and peppers and top with cheese. I used sliced swiss, but cheddar or provolone would also be lovely.
Broil just until cheese is melted.
Serve to the man in your life with corn on the cob and call it dinner. Remind him how lucky he is. And also remind him to savor his sandwich, because tomorrow night dinner might be Raisin Bran. The end.

Cereal must be the choice alternative dinner for husbands all over because that's exactly what my own dear guy got last night! I know my husband would infinitely prefer this delicious sandwich. Who wouldn't? I can't wait to try this recipe. It looks perfect! Thanks Prudy!

Fast and easy are the two big adjectives in feeding a family, aren't they? My hubby would eat cold cereal if forced to, but prefers instant oatmeal in maple walnut flavor.

Hi I just love your blog. I have tried many of your dishes and they are always so good. I am throwing a 25th wedding anniversary for my inlaws and need to bake a cake but am stuck on what to do. Any ideas. I wanted to make if fun and maybe do two layers and maybe a filling inside like rasberry or strawberry.

That looks good. We have eaten cereal for supper too. Your sandwich would be much better though.

No cold cereal for dinner here...my go to hurry up meal is noodles with butter and garlic...

I don't often make cereal for breakfast, but we have popcorn for dinner plenty of nights around here! But, not tonight. When I opened your blog today, I knew exactly what we were having for dinner! These were a big hit. Everyone loved them and I love how easy they were and I took your advice and had my husband do the grilling.

Your husband reaally is lucky, but aren't we all really? I wish I could live at your house and eat your cooking every night, but I feel pretty lucky just having access to all of your delicious recipes! Thanks for sharing!

Hey Prudy, it's been a while and I've missed you my dear old friend! Things are finally calming down for me time and travel-wise, and what with it being winter still I have a few optimal blog stalking weeks ahead of me and I can't wait.

In just browsing what I see up on your front page lately, I must say something about you. Most people who can sniff out their comfort zone. They have recipes and ideas that are pretty one-dimensional in their characteristics, you know what I mean? But you have the whole gammut girl! Good on ya!

Hope summer is treating you well and that you're staying cool!

As for us and cold cereal, I ate so much of it when pregnant that I literally have not even purchased a box of it for nearly two years. I just can't stomach it! It is not only gross and sugary anyway, but it brings me right back to that awful, awful nausea, you know? We simply don't eat it anymore and I say good riddance! But my husband is not picky and probably hasn't even noticed if we had any or not! I just put his plate out in front of him and pack his lunch and he just eats whatever. Kinda funny.
