Tuesdays with Dorie: Chocolate Malted Cookies with Peanut Butter Whoppers

I hope you're as mad about cookies as I am. Because it's Tuesdays with Dorie and I've got a whopper malted cookie that will make you stark raving mad. Actually, my love affair with cookies is no TWD summer luvin' fling. I have a deep and abiding love for the little sweet circles. I like them better than all the brainy superfoods and healthfoods and edamame and tofu. I wish I could eat cookies every day and still not get the chubs and live to be 103. Since I can't, I make them every week instead. Without fail. Sunday night you're always going to find my cookies at my place and you're all invited. I'll give you my address later. Promise.
I made my cookie batch, knowing it would be a soft, cakey cookie due to the addition of milk. I added a whole extra cup of flour to my dough and they were still plenty pillowy. For kicks, I added some Peanut Butter Whoppers (find em' at Wal-Mart) to half of my dough, and used Chocolate Ovaltine for the malted milk powder. Wowee. With plain whoppers or peanut butter whoppers, this is one good cookie. When I was laying my little 5 year old cowboy down to bed, he asked me if he could have eight cookies in the morning for breakfast. When I told him he could have just one with his wheaties, he told me to hide the rest so Dad wouldn't take them to work. Can you see why I love this kid? He has inherited my sweets greediness, my weakness for thinking of food when I should be counting sheep, my sneaky craftiness for hiding the best treats. All those irresistible flaws in one little person! That little sweetie doesn't fall far from the cookie jar.
Go here and get the recipe. (Remember I added a whole extra cup of flour, and I used half whole wheat for all the flour. I also poked extra whoppers into the tops of the baked cookies.) Make them soon. For my fellow penny pinchers, the estimated cost is $5.00 for the full batch. I can't stop thinking about them and can only hope I can make it Sunday before I succumb to the dark side and make them again. Coming Tomorrow:
Late Summer Roasted Red and Yellow Pepper Soup

Wow--the peanutbutter takes these to a whole other level--YUM! I would want to hide them all for me too!

Cookies! If your little cookie monster wants 8 for breakfast and is afraid of dad taking them off to work, they must be awesome! That's to funny. He's got the right idea about hiding them from dad. I love that are little ones say the cutest things.

Mad about cookies, who me? No! Not even chocolate. Nop. I won't care for these, no no... But just in case, can you please post your adress!!!!!!!!!!!!

They make peanut butter Whoppers????????????????????????????????????????? You have opened up a whole new world to me!!!!!

Peanutbutter whoppers - I have never seen them. Lucky you!!! I had a heard enough time finding regular whoppers.

I made these yesterday and they were AMAZING out of the oven. I just had a cold one (for breakfast :) )and discovered they are better warm. A few seconds in the microwave outta fix that.

I now have a massive jar of ovaltine in the cupboard. I'm off to do a search for what else I can make with it.

Those look wonderful!! I could eat the peanut butter all alone and be happy!

Smart, smart boy you have there. You really do need to plan and scheme in advance to make sure you get your fair share, because they will disappear quickly! Yours look amazing, as usual. I love your addition of PB Whoppers!

Your peanut butter whopper drops look wonderful! I love how cute and puffy they are. Your son sounds like such a sweetie, dreaming of cookies for breakfast, how adorable. My family is full of little cookies monsters so we try to make one batch a week, can't go wrong with a cookie :)

Mmmmm! Glad to see you carrying the peanut butter tradition from the previous week, because there's not a better flavor in the world!

I love the look of yours with the whole whoppers sticking out.
Today is the first day I have heard of pb whoppers.
Great job, Prudy!

Pamela said...

"Doesn't fall far from the cookie jar!" LOL! I might have to start using that one! Your cookies look lumpy and chunky, which of course, is a compliment! :o)

Wow, I didn't even know there was such a thing as peanut butter whoppers. They sound fabulous, what a great idea!

I would also like 8 of these for breakfast! Yum!

I have not seen PB whoppers but will be looking for some. I will also be stopping by for some...if there is any leftover:)

Laura said...

I'm going to have to look for some, too! Dagerously good, I bet! Your cookies look fabulous and your son sounds like he's definitely following his mama's brilliant footsteps :-)

Alexis and others:
I found the peanut butter whoppers at Wal mart. Thanks for stopping by and good luck with that Ovaltine. I have a big can too, but the kids love it in milk so I'm all set.

Marjie said...

"The sweetie doesn't fall far from the cookie jar." Love it! I'm afraid I don't make cookies. When my daughters do, they make several hundred to last at most 2 days. Sad.

Natalie Que said...

Yum! These look tasty!

I got your comment and I'm too tired right now but I'm on it. I will send you an email so that I don't have to come back and get your address tomorrow but I didn't want you to think I had disregarded your request!

Marie Rayner said...

Erin, your cookies look fabulous, but then again, I'd expect nothing less! You have me craving peanut butter whoppers now...sadly a creature not found on these British shores! However did you keep your whoppers from melting?? Mind ended up all crunchy and chewy and not at all discernable as a whopper for the most part!

Flourchild said...

Your whoppers looks GREAT on top. Mine didn't look like that! I used the peanut butter whoppers too. They also have strawberry milkshake whoppers. I thought they might be good with white chocolate in a cookie.

Prudy said...

Marie:
I poked extra on top when they were done baking-so there were melted ones insides and crispy ones on top.

Nancy/n.o.e said...

Great idea about adding the extra flour. Maybe that would solve the softness issue I had with mine. Such a cute story about your little one. Sweet dreams, indeed!

I had no idea there was such a thing as peanut butter whoppers. You took those cookies to a whole other level. You did a great job being Cajun!

MK and Co. said...

Your little boy is adorable. I could just picture him saying that with a very serious look in his big brown eyes. Tell him I've been known to stash delicious foods too. Cookies look so go and I had no idea about Peanut Butter Whoppers. How is Ovaltine? The only thing I know about Ovaltine is from Christmas Story where Ralphy was told to make sure he drinks plenty of it by Little Orphan Annie. Was she right?

Maria said...

I didn't even know they made PB whoppers! Great idea!! These cookies look great! I haven't tried this yet...but I am going to now. Josh loves ovaltine!! I am sure he will love it in these cookies! But no PB for him, he is allergic, sad!

They look wonderfully delicious! Can I really have your address so I can come on Sundays and try all your delicious cookie creations? I love how you put extra whoppers on top- I think I would've like that, adding a little more whopper taste. They look great Prudy! Your little guy is so funny. Mine kept signing "more more more" and trying to climb up on the counter! I guess passing the little boy test is a sign of a great recipe!

I keep seeing recipes with different flavors of Whoppers but can't find them anywhere here! I guess I'll have to stick to the original, which isn't too shabby, right? Your cookies look great. :)

Allie said...

MMMM! Can't go wrong with peanut butter and chocolate. I'll have to make these when my husband isn't around so I don't have to share. :)

Oh I wish we could just eat cookies all the time too! My in laws are here and every night around dinner time, I test the waters with questions like, "I don't really feel like dinner, how about some cookies?" But no one goes along, evidently cookies don't equal dinner. But they do, in my book!

Anonymous said...

Oh yes, and as usual, "These look great, can't wait to try them" I feel like a robot, but it's so true about every recipe you make!

Emily said...

Ahhh! There is so much malt going around.

I'll have to try the pb whoppers. They have strawberry also, I think. I don't know?? A strawberry whopper? Sounds sketchy.

I am jealous you found pb whoppers - I searched but couldn't find them around here. Your cookies look fab and I am ashamed to admit I could never stick to a Sunday-only sweet diet, as much as I should probably try it!

Tammy said...

peanutbutter whoppers sounds fan (considering I didnt know what whoppers were until i got this book!). I left the milk out of mine whcih made the dough a bit firmer

gigi said...

I went to Wal-mart today for the first time in 11 days and that was a real record for me. But I wanted you to know that two of the things in my cart were Peanut Butter Whoppers and Ovaltine! I thought, I must be crazy! But some day soon, I'm making this recipe! I'll let you know how we like them.

Things are so much better. Heavenly Father is so full of love for all His children and we are very blessed :)

I am still getting over the peanutbutter Whoppers too! Thank you for telling us where you found your peanutbutter Whoppers and what made you think to add another cup of flour? You are simply brilliant! The coffee whoppers were a shock to me too when I found them. =D

i am loving the PB whoppers! i want 8 cookies for my breakfast, too!

Liz said...

You make me laugh! Your son sounds like a mini-me, with perhaps double the craftiness and advanced planning I had at his age. I love the idea of adding PB whoppers, that might have been just what I needed to cut down on some of the rich chocolate flavor. Yours look the closest to Dorie's I've seen so far, I wish I had thought to add chips and whoppers to the top of the cookies before baking to give them that extra sumthin sumthin.

grace said...

i hate regular whoppers (although that's one of the best names for a candy ever), but i haven't tried the peanut butter version. i'll bet i'd like those, and i'm sure i'd love your cookies. :)

I said to myself, "Well, I wonder what Erin is going to do this week to put this recipe OVER THE EDGE," and now I have seen it. You are so great at being creative and your cookies look really really great...nice and rich and puffy and chewy (mine were flat and crispy...don't ask because I haven't a clue).

Love the comment from your son about not letting Daddy get them. Around here, it is Daddy who says to me, "Hide these from the kids so I'll have some in the morning." LOL.
